Bay Materials was founded in 1999 by Dr. Ray Stewart and Jim Reed to fulfill a need for applied polymer research and product development services in Silicon Valley. Bay Materials has the capability to address fundamental polymer development needs, from concept through to commercialization. We strive to be the most efficient solution to resolve our customer’s polymer problems.

Over our history we have contributed to a broad array of developments from new orthodontics methods, to advancements in coronary catheter technology, to new light bulbs, and for customers ranging from Valley Start-Ups to Fortune 500 companies.

Leadership Team

Jim Reed

Co-founder and Managing Member

Jim has a background in Mechanical Engineering and Business, with thirty five years’ experience in business activities ranging from start-up incubators to mature global entities. Mr. Reed has spent most of his career involved with the development and deployment of new products that are based on new technologies; most developments were related to the application of custom or unique polymers.

Jim graduated from UC Berkeley with a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, and is an alumnus of the Executive Program INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France.


 

 

Ray Stewart

Ph.D., Co-founder and Managing Member

Ray is a polymer scientist and entrepreneur with a successful track record in conducting breakthrough applied research, and growing new business ventures. Prior to establishing Bay Materials, Ray was the founder and chief scientist of Landec Corporation, a public company that successfully developed and commercialized a new class of temperature responsive polymers, Intelimers®, and products enabled by them.

Prior to founding Landec Corporation Ray was a scientist at Raychem Corporation a Fortune 500 materials science company.

Ray holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Minnesota and has over 35 issued U.S. patents.



 

 

Chris Vogdes

Director, Research & Development

Chris has over 20 years in materials-based technical product research and development.

Chris has been successful developing and launching new products in Automotive, Medical, Electronics, and Consumer industries; managing projects in Raychem Corporation, Dow Corning Corporation, Cordis Corporation, and Pionetics LLC. She managed a QS9000 silicone gels business unit that supplied materials to major OEM companies producing automotive connectors, flat-screen TV’s, and military/aircraft communications equipment.

Chris holds both a BS in Chemistry and MS in Chemical Engineering from MIT. She holds 8 issued US patents.




 

 

Aimee Luthringer

Manager, Operation & Quality Systems

Aimee has 10 years of experience in quality systems and operations management. She develops and maintains our manufacturing quality system and provides feedback upstream to improve manufacturing processing and yields. She enjoys statistics and applying the scientific method to test hypotheses and solve challenges. In addition Aimee leads Bay Material’s facility safety program.

Aimee has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Eckerd College, St. Petersburg Florida.




 

 

Echo Song

Business Analyst

Echo is in charge of general activities related to identifying and characterizing product markets, brand image building and promoting sales.

In addition to that, Echo also leads in designing, testing and executing marketing campaigns and managing lead generation programs for Bay Materials products.

Echo graduated from Stanford University in 2011 and holds a MS degree in Management Science & Engineering, she also holds a BE degree from Shanghai Jiaotong University, China.
